How do I get inbound email into Votel, and should I turn on receiving for my domain?

By default, email in Votel is outbound only. You have two ways to get inbound email into the CRM.

Option 1, forward a copy (best if you already have an email service such as Google Workspace or Outlook):

  1. Go to Settings, then Integrations, open your sender identity and click Edit.
  2. Copy the forwarding email address shown there.
  3. In Gmail, Outlook or your other service, set up a rule to always send a copy of inbound email to that address.

The email then lives in both places, a contact is created if it does not exist, and you see the whole conversation on the contact in the CRM.

Option 2, let Votel receive email for the domain. When you connect your email domain, there is a switch at the bottom asking if you want to receive email on this domain. It is off by default. Turn it on and you get MX records to add to your DNS. With receiving on you can have your own mailboxes in Votel, for example for employees.

Only turn on receiving if you want Votel to be your inbox. Email can only go to one service at a time: once the MX records are on your DNS, they take over all inbound email, and an existing service such as Google Workspace stops receiving. If you or your customer already have an email service, keep the domain as sending only and use forwarding.
